2023 repress - pablos eye is the science of studio pressure, when engineer becomes artist. appropriating left and right as well as front and back, pablos eye uses the mixing desk to examine and exhaust the possibilities of moments. pablos eye is a record of that examination and exhaustion, but it is also a record of its own inner space. by means of depth placement, psychoacoustics and spatial fug, pablo’s eye is experienced in the deeper reaches of the body, bypassing the conscious part of the mind entirely. . pablos eye is the turning of recorded music inside out to show its seams. it interrogates a song, stripping down the body of the song to reveal its bones. pablo’s eye is in the interstices of music, it plugs the gaps, fills the holes. pablo’s eye seeks out the concealed mechanisms, it is a songs hidden agenda. for this compilation, it was decided to present the softer air-beatings of pablos eye. more than anything, pablos eye is a temporary atmosphere, like a taste or a dream.

‘pat thomas introduces marijata’ is a seminal ghanian album that fuses highlife, reggae, folk, funk and soul, from legendary vocalist pat thomas. originally released in 1976 on gapophone records. ‘marijata’ was a group made up of three members – kofi ‘electric’ addison on drums, bob fischlan on organ and nat osmanu on guitar, hailing from ghana. pat thomas career began in 1969 with the ‘broadway dance band’, leaving a year later to join the ‘uhuru dance band’. he then played with ebo taylor’s ‘blue monks’ and finally formed the ‘sweet beans’ in 1973 where he really made his name. the group released ‘false lover’ in 1974, split and then reformed as marijata, releasing ‘marijata’ (also available on mr bongo) and this album, ‘pat thomas introduces marijata’. thomas career spans more than 50 years and he still tours regularly across the world. replica original artwork, official mr bongo reissue. licensed from gapophone records courtesy of george prah.

after the uneventful resolution of a labour dispute at assistance hq, the resident pencil-pushers turn their tempo dial to a leisurely 105bpm, at long last serving up lukewarm plates of beam-03 to the more sluggish peak-time massive. in mambala , the now-obligatory bongo jostles with squelchy synths, whilst echoed claps and ominous bells should see even the most hesitant rabbit dragged down the hole. bebny experiments with low ph levels, metallic clutter, and some surprise horn cameos.

london band tomaga are back with their fourth release under the hands in the dark banner: memory in vivo exposure. the 12inch ep consists of four original tracks and yet another new musical evolution for the duo. whilst they still use complex layering and harmonic polyrhythms in developing their original approach, this time the sonic tales they have shared are much more cinematic and dreamlike. these visions are locked up into emotionally charged loops to convey the sensation of a dream in which half remembered things become new zones of feeling.

get on down proudly presents another top-notch vinyl reissue, from their long-running series of collaborations with james brown’s famed 70s funk label people records. as the 1970s wore on, the classic funk sounds that had defined james brown’s backing band, the j.b.’s, gave way to the rise of disco music. fred wesley and his collective of musicians couldn’t resist the chance to make their mark, releasing “hustle with speed” in 1975, with charles bobbit and don love producing, and the godfather himself, james brown co-writing and providing arrangements. “hustle with speed” didn’t cross over like the band had hoped it would, but it was nonetheless remarkable album, featuring the j.b.’s signature funky style married with disco to exciting effect. all the while there’s still plenty to be had for the funk die-hard, from the brass blow-out jam “here we come, here we go, here we are”, to the trombone-heavy “all aboard the funky soul train”, to the powerhouse opening salvo that is “(it’s not the express) it’s the jbs monaurail”. songs from “hustle with speed” would take on lives of their own decades after the album’s release, through sampled appearances in tracks by jay-z, nas, eric b. & rakim, ultramagnetic mcs, epmd, and many more.

san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon’s creation, whose debut lp “this is the beginning” acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, ‘back roads’ – with its glorious harmonies and the soaring ‘power’. more thoughtful numbers such as ‘until you were gone’ or ‘love’ will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.

in october 2017 honey dijon was commissioned to take part in the smirnoff were open campaign, aiming to promote inclusive night time culture and celebrate nightlifes ability to transcend gender boundaries and prejudice. as well as appearing in the were open tv commercial, honey was asked to record her take on the initiative’s ethos for creating positive change, making dance music culture a more open-minded and socially inclusive space. what resulted was a rework of ‘queen of disco’ sylvester’s ‘stars’ featuring vocals by singer-songwriter sam sparro, who she collaborated with previously on her album the best of both worlds. now being released on limited edition blue vinyl via classic music company, with breathtaking artwork from assume vivid astro focus who also supplied cover artwork for the album, the entire proceeds from the release will be donated to lgbt foundation. created with parts recorded especially for the were open advert,stars (disco version), produced with the help of classic head luke solomon and studio partner lance desardi, pops sylvester’s spangled party-starter directly into 2018. previously made available as a free download to coincide with the launch of the campaign, the cosmic energy dub, underlining honey’s acidic but sweet production, is followed by two mixes by one of her favourite producers of the moment and fellow chicagoan, cratebug. his nova remix references the classic disco elements of the original, while the supernova remix - exclusive to vinyl - goes fully intergalactic with a glorious squelching extended mix. paying lip service to the legacy of a truly gender-redefining figure whose music is nothing but inclusive and empowering, honey dijon and classic prove the power of music to inspire positive change in the dance music communities with this stars release.

on “5 star motel”, that younger gitkin (henceforth referred to simply as gitkin) has sought to expand the philosophy he encountered on that tape. the guitar is common thread, the raft to navigate a sun-dappled stream of ideas. it’s an embrace of cultures where folkloric stringed instruments still rule, or where they ve led to a more recent embrace of the electric guitar. he traces the loose, meandering paths which join them together.

r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.

after kicking off the year with releases by wheelman and general ludd, were very pleased to announce that naum gabo completes our recent trilogy of releases from glasgow based artists. alongside ivan smagghe, its no secret that optimo have been a huge influence around these parts and having released ivans smagghe & cross project on belters last year, its a huge honour to work with naum gabo - the production partnership of jonnie wilkes (jg wikes of optimo) and james savage (mastering engineer for optimo music). fittingly enough, naum gabo played live at the first ever optimo related parties we attended at the sub club back in 2005 and jonnies influential and supportive presence has been felt over the years as we started to become more involved in the glasgow scene and as the label developed. so it didnt require much thought to do this release before we had even heard these new naum gabo tracks they are absolute slammers of the highest order! really big release, bringing to our minds the likes of errorsmith. belters is a new club-focussed label brought to you by huntleys + palmers.

2018 repress - standard cover ... us born and meanwhile in berlin residing kevin mchugh aka ambivalent presents his cocoon recordings single debut. ambivalence seems to the be the musical direction here. daylights is a sheer technomonster, musclepacked and full of dark detroit flavour but the used vocal samples and the harmonic synthstrings cant hide the magic touch of daylights. although the massive techno bassline is the star of this track we are sure it will find its way into the sets of many house djs, too. in contrast to that “swung out” appears way more like pure techno and cannot be filed as house at all. we are hypnotized by the shuffled rim shots and hi hats and ambivalent drives this one straight through the dub universe. techno is the destination and the dark vibe of swung out makes it a perfect after hour weapon.

ghanaian legend ebo taylor returns with perhaps his finest album to date. but don’t take our word for it. that’s coming straight from the man himself. and he should know after more than 60 years in the business.

following from deetrons accomplished entry in to the dj-kicks mix series, !k7 are now serving up one of the original singles from it. produced by the swiss artist and featuring soul futurist steve spacek, it comes with the original and three vital versions. entitled chose me, the single is six tender minutes of musical electronic soul. warm and supple bass, twinkling keys and smeared chords form the atmosphere as spacek delivers a dreamy and heartfelt vocal up top. its a track to get the spine tingling, while the instrumental allows the celestial keys to ring out into a night sky as the main focal point. on the jupiter version, the drums are more loose and broken up, lending a spaced out vibe that will be perfect on outdoor terraces as the weather warms up. jumbled percussion tumbles next to the chords as the vocal soars. a jupiter instrumental closes out this cosmic and cultured house ep

hot on the heels of their recent eps on roam, correspondant and futureboogie, zombies in miami maintain the disco heat with their debut on mike simonettis 2mr. three tracks and one remix deep, the entire release is a full trip to the senses. take it off leads by example: strident, uplifting and dynamically arranged so a whole new level of feels is unleashed when you least expect it, theres a real timeless energy and focus coded deep into every element. new odisea takes more of a cosmic approach with its slinking bassline and soaring, yearning chords that weave and wave above it. buckle up even the slightest variations and percussive additions are so well placed, they create an almighty rush every single time. finally ‘where is the voice of that man on acid’ attempts to ask the question we’ve all been asking for years. fittingly psychedelic, layered and circuitous, its springy riff persistently tickling under waves of evocative atmospheres and it comes complete with a sublime, sub-loaded rolling technoid trip-fest from honey soundsystems jackie house. the duo describe the ep as the result of hours of jamming, trying to imagine and recreate the loudest, most energetic and sweaty dancefloor tracks that we could play in mexico, europe and all over the world no matter the borders. we’d describe that as mission accomplished.

124 recordings know how to put together a deep house compilation, and they re sounding fierce on this latest, appropriately titled levels up. the jams come heavy and funky from a range of on-point operators, leading in with tom jay s quintessential new jersey bump n grind on hanging on. david moran is a little more shadowy but no less groovesome, while nicola brusegan takes things on a sweet and smooth tip. across the whole double pack there are classically informed jams to satisfy the most weary deep house heads, but keep an ear out for the old-school flavoured heft of freak ds power of bass, which should get some seriously jacking airtime in the right kind of dance.

naïf 008 opens a series of five eps that will be released around the release of the dj-mix-cd also named naif which has its release in april 2018 the first strike comes with two blinding techno tracks: running man is a contribution by the gentleman of techno steve bicknell. the other comes from the young swedish producer that goes by the name of kuf and who is part of the arsenik crew. besides that we find two compositions by phillip sollmann himself that show his abstract and experimental approach. while aliasing bells is a texture of sampled tibetan bells tag3 by his side-project autolyse is a jam on a light-sensor-controlled custom-made synth. perfect for layering on top of a mix. after more then three years of silence as a producer, efdemin aka phillip sollmann returns with a striking hybrid concept that merges the album format with the continuous dj mix format, presenting completely new material in a seamless manner. the cd-mix, named naif, officially reinstates his label of the same name and is a sprawling tour of inner space featuring 19 distinct tracks from fellow producers along with an additional ten that feature efdemin himself (either as soloist or collaborator). the release condenses his decade-long dj-ing journey and evolution as a producer into a single potent elixir of contemporary techno. naïf consists of completely unreleased material from both himself and valued collaborators, all of which will eventually manifest as ep releases: five on his own naïf label and two more on curle.

argentinian veteran jorge savoretti has been djing for more than 20 years, and his first release for esperanza records traces back to 2005. in this time laps he has produced 2 albums, 20 eps and a great number of remixes, on labels such as raum musik, visionquest and ilian tape. his debut on cadenza is a crisp breeze of graceful music for dancing. side a starts point-blank with bou gei bouncing shuffle, driving bass line, lively cymbals, sparkling band-passed chords, summing-up jorge s true dedication to nightclubs and nightlife. with no reprieve, ruth suspicious pads lurk behind a funky swinging rhythm spruced up by a continuous surfacing of snare rolls and giggly stabs. on the b side, sensu dub explores without hesitation darker textures and resonances, leaving no concessions to leave the dancefloor. finally u-fonk #04.01 dives into sweating hotblooded late-time hours, with am hypnotising deep-toned coil, soaked of greasy riffs and gloomy fumes.

mark ambrose doubles up on his appearance on was/is with this strident bout of deep end dwellers, kicking off in style with the charged up strut and punchy mono bass of makossa (mix 1) making a point of stepping into a more peak time sound. makossa (mix 2) takes things in a more bugging direction, but there s still plenty of pressure to be felt in the wriggling low end mess and nagging hi hats. the teakup mix of makossa is a devilish broken beat track, and then wagamama slips in a loopy melodic hook and lets a firm but freaky slice of techno roll out underneath

kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of congo beat the drum, but on this second release for his label brush & broom, he s decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. honda is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while yamaha takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. suzuki is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of up-for-it early trax records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. toyota finishes the ep off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage

len faki mixes , transparent vinyl , len faki takes on a couple of classics for 007 of his ongoing special edits series lfrmx, striking a perfect balance between the old and new. first up is a tweaked version of steve stolls 1998 lp-excerpt reciproheat, elegantly edged while carrying the proper weight to move. dj shufflemasters booming housedust release from the same year however has a wacky tack to its groove, its mind-bending qualities yet amplified by faki boiling down the tempo to more current confines. the flipside goes all deep, starring a rework of valentino moras recent space odyssey. building upon the originals lively tribal percussion, the prevailent mystical mood is spliced up, readying the track special moments in an otherwise up-tempo-environment. a gently pulsing edit of ubx127s barabrus eventually puts a meditative and soothing finishing touch to the ep. as with all releases of lf rmx, the proceeds of this record will be forwarded to the berlin organization straßenkinder e.v. to be used in actions against child poverty.

new clouds material from calum macleod and liam robertson can mean only one thing: these things will go quick, and as you can imagine, you ll want to get them in your dj sets just in time for the nye debauchery. the duo land on british techno imprint overlee assembly, kicking the carnage off with a perc remix of tuned to a dead channel, something of a toxic headbanger with a gnarly bass at its core. this is followed by a much sleeker, more restrained tuned version of chained to a dead channel, and then by a jungle/breakcore driven version from headcore wreckage, and an acid-laden, drum-nutty hardcore tuned again version.

tom ellard is the creative force behind australian post-punk band severed heads. in 1982 he self-released two cassettes of solo material, “80s cheesecake” and “snappy carrion”. these cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental severed heads’ albums “clean” and “blubberknife” before the start of something new with “since the accident”. with the advent of the then new roland tb-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, tom began to write more beat driven material. the rhythms are made by a tr-808 drum machine, kawai s100f and sh-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. two songs from these cassettes would later appear on the b-side of the “dead eyes opened” single.

this release is a reissue of everydayz ep with an unreleased dub from the vault. all tracks have been reworked with a new mixing and mastering for more good sounds!

after putting 1990s record label emote to bed and a 17 year break from making music mark churcher has now knocked out 2 rasping acid house discs within a year on his new chicago bee record label. the first very well received ep whos this guy? is followed up with the same a eno-acid moniker. this 4 track ep is deeper, darker and even more drugged out. the tracks are slower and longer allowing the listener to be sonically submerged in the reverb swelled acid lines.

this is music that comes from playing records. dj fiskars have done it for 15 years, subconsciously gathering an assortment of ideas, vibes and moments on the job. it’s only now as he’s starting his career as a recording artist those ideas start to materialize in an accessible form on wax. it’s fair to suggest that the record has a day side and a night side. “filippa” is a somewhat balearic piece: on the shelf it lands somewhere between your omar s records and a mario kart disc. on the flip, “key largo’s” mellow yet banging house grooves drop especially well at the after hours party. the release also marks the dawn of fiskars’ new vinyl-first imprint leave the man in peace with his kit – be on the lookout for more releases in 2018.

new yorks marcos cabral steps up for his first full release on dimensions recordings, with the nature walk ep. following on from his epic prochainement masterpiece on dimensions 002, the ep provides a glimpse into the mind of a well-established and hugely respected artist. nature walk is a broad ep that demonstrates just why marcos records have been finding their way into a multitude of djs bags for the last fifteen years. from his work with jacques renault as runaway, and his coveted hamilton dance records output to his more recent deeper and darker leanings for leading labels such as clone, l.i.e.s. and mule musiq, marcos has quietly and studiously worked at developing an impressive catalogue which most folks who have brushed with house and techno will have heard, whether they know it or not. the ep provides a snapshot of some of the tastes and styles that marcos has experimented with over the years, the rolling, energetic and optimistic sounding, not quite house, not quite techno of wishful gives way to the brooding, dub techno of title track, nature walk. cape cod sees marcos in classic, house mode with a cut that could easily have dropped on nycs nu groove records, whereas rice a roni is a no nonsense nugget of twisted, grinding, acid. the ep rounds off with lets see how the light goes through it, a spacey hypnotic workout for the late hours and a fitting end to a stand out ep from the self proclaimed, hardest working man!

by day he guides lasers into position using precision equipment, at night he crafts raw house music. welcome to the unusual world of reflection port assembly. we got to know one another through a few brief, slurred encounters in the smoking area during the fabled forza italo night or at the aptly named gary’s gang. pretty soon it was clear that he had impeccable taste, like that record that featured coil and ice t. one sunny friday afternoon in june, he tore himself away from guiding the lasers and we met up in the city centre. the light breeze did nothing to dissuade the office workers from gathering outside the pub for sneaky post-work pints. surrounded a sea of grey and blue business attire, we agreed to make ‘retribution’ the second release on first cut. featuring three cuts, it spans house, electro, boogie and even some detroit techno influences. but ’retribution’ is more than the sum of these parts. unlike his precision-based day job it’s rough and imperfect, flawed but warm, messy and charming - like a snapshot of every day life in dublin.

bawrut has had an amazing couple of years. since kicking our label off back in 2015 with the modern acid classic ciquita (12inches of which will now set you back silly money on discogs), the madrid-based producer has gone from strength to strength. last year saw him tear down sets at sonar and farr festivals, drop a feted new ep on hard fist records, and have his music soundtrack numerous adverts for fabric events. other djs have been quick to show their appreciation, and bawrut’s unique appeal can be seen in how far and wide across the spectrum his music has featured. optimo, avalon emerson, patrick topping, jackmaster, artwork, andrew weatherall and many more have all supported heavily. were proud to kickstart bawrut’s 2018 with 4x4, a brand new ep of typically leftfield bangers. these four tracks come on like a whirlwind journey through a bawrut dj set, with something for every time of the night. ghettoscar fuses african chants with burbling acid, building the kind of goodtime dancefloor warmth bawrut is famed for. more cowbell does exactly what you’d expect, giving djs a glorious, cowbell-powered disco bomb that fuses the spirit of incredible bongo band with classic nyc house. i hear voices is a crazy ride, with an expertly cut up vocal sample repurposed into a weird, descending riff that’s quite unlike anything else out there. throw in bawrut’s trademark kitbag of carnival whistles, rattling latin percussion and a creeping acid line that works itself up into a soul-salving joy and youve got a modern classic on your hands. finally, lead track three sounds is probably bawruts biggest moment to date, a peak time jacking techno monster built from the most minimal of elements - drums, claps, a one note bass squelch and a tom drum gone wild. bawrut takes this tom sound and treats it like a 303, pushing far off the rails, working it up and up, twisting it through pitch and frequency like a man possessed, raising its pressure til it tears off the roof. theres no one else making techno quite like it - and you can expect dancefloors to be going crazy to the mania of three sounds throughout 2018 so there you have it - four more missives from the wizard of madrid. play em loud.
